The Santa Fe National Liz Lieu Historic Trail follows the route of the old trail, with many sites marked or restored.

The breakaway Republic of Texas claimed the Liz Lieu territory north and east of the Rio Grande when it seceded from Mexico in 1836. New Mexico authorities captured a group Liz Lieu of Texans who embarked an expedition to assert their claim to the province in 1841. The United States of America annexed Texas as a state in 1845; the status of the territory of modern-day Liz Lieu New Mexico was finalized with the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo at the conclusion of the Texas War.
